Sorbitization of castings step by step

Sorbitization of castings To obtain the desired properties of castings, a number of treatments are used to adjust their specific parameters to the functions they are to perform. Such treatments include, among others, thermal treatment. In the past, we have written more extensively about the heat treatment of cast steel and cast iron - today […]

Machining of castings - what should you know?

Mechanical treatment of castings Machining is the last stage in the process of producing elements in casting technology. Its purpose is to remove excess casting material in places whose geometry and dimensions were not possible to obtain by casting. To put it simply, it serves to refine the parameters of the project and its final […]

Molding sands in foundry 101

A casting cannot be made without the right mold, and this in turn cannot be created without the use of the appropriate molding sand. Molding sand is a special mixture that, after being placed in a mold and hardened, creates a precisely reproduced casting. There are many types of molding sands, and the choice of the right one depends on many factors, such as the type of alloy, casting technology or the required accuracy of the casting. In this article, we will take a closer look at molding sands in foundry, we will discuss their division and application, and we will find out what factors affect the quality of the casting.

Bentonite sands in foundry - properties, ecological aspect and practical use

In highly industrialized countries, 60 - 85% of iron alloy castings are made in bentonite-bonded molding sands. One of the types of molding clays that bind the matrix (i.e. molding quartz sand 1K➗4K) are montmorillonite clays, i.e. bentonites. It is these clays that are widely used in the production of molding sands for small and medium castings, especially when it comes to mechanized and automated foundries. Not without reason, bentonite sands are one of the most frequently used molding sands in cast iron foundry. After all, they are efficient and economical, and the molds made with them are precise and solid. Thanks to newer and newer discoveries, they have the makings of the most ecological molding sands. However, they are not without flaws. Which flaws? You will find out from the text.

Everything about heat treatment of cast steel

Heat treatment of cast steel Heat treatment is a set of technological procedures, the process of which – simply put – consists in heating the cast iron to the desired temperature, keeping it there for the required time, and finally cooling it at a preset speed. Thanks to this set of methods, it is possible […]

Alloy cast steel - properties, features and application

Alloy cast steel - what are its properties, features and application? Cast steels are one of the most important as well as the most popular materials used in foundry. They are characterized by exceptional strength and wear resistance, which makes them irreplaceable both in the production of many machine elements and tools. In this article, […]

Alloy cast iron - its types, properties and applications

Alloy cast iron is cast iron enriched with alloying additives, thanks to which the cast iron's resistance to weather conditions, chemicals, high temperatures, abrasion, etc. increases. Additions in the form of silicon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, aluminum and other elements allow the modification of certain chemical and physical properties of specific alloys, and thus adapting them to the specific requirements of individual castings.

Carbon cast steel - its properties, features and application

Cast steels are one of the most important and popular materials used in foundry. They are characterized by exceptional strength and wear resistance, which makes them irreplaceable in the production of many machine elements and tools. In this article, we will focus on carbon cast steel.

Gray cast iron - properties, features and application

Cast iron is the most numerous group of foundry iron alloys (Fe). These are, to be more precise, alloys of iron and carbon, in which the carbon content is above 2%, with a maximum content ranging from 3.8% to 6.7%. In this article you will learn what gray cast iron is, what is the chemical composition, grades and types of gray cast iron, how this type of cast iron is made, what are the mechanical properties of gray cast iron, where is the gray cast iron used, what are the advantages and disadvantages of this alloy.
